In March 2003 Environment Wales registered the restoration of the Parish Field as a project with sustainable environmental benefits. In May and June the Countryside Council for Wales, The Vale of Glamorgan Council, Glamorgan Heritage Coast and the Wildlife Trusts for South and West Wales all provided letters of support for the work being undertaken and we approached Environment Wales for grant assistance towards tools, training, protective clothing, insurance and materials for volunteers (drawn from residents and Penarth Scouts), together with some contractor work. We were delighted to learn this week that the grant has been approved and over the autumn/winter we plan to:
Cut two acres of grass and remove leavings to the compost area Cut ½ acre of scrub Remove potentially dangerous quarry trees (by contractor) and stack into woodpiles Remove fallen barbed wire around quarry and replace with posts and square link fencing donated by the Wildlife Trusts Create 30 metres of dry stone walling on south boundary Lay two sections of hedge Mechanical cut of roadside hedge
Environment Wales awarded the grant to the project in September 2003
